How to Feed Raw
There are a lot of resources to learn how to feed raw, some I've listed in the resource section. Stores that specialize in raw food are very knowledgeable and helpful, as are holistic veterinarians. I'm happy to answer any questions I can.
Here is an online raw food calculator to figure out how much to feed as your puppy grows into an adult.
Here are the basics for making your own raw food:
Variety of Quality Meat* ( Mostly muscle, Some organs, Some bones)
Regularly: Turkey, Venison, Beef, Buffalo, Lamb, Rabbit, Goat, Chicken, Pheasant, Moose, Elk.
Occasionally: Herring, Salmon, Tripe, Eggs.
Avoid: Never feed PORK.
Regular Treats: Elk/ Moose necks, Lamb shanks, chicken necks & backs, Turkey necks. Occasionally Buffalo bones, but avoid large bones in general.
*Organic or Non-medicated meat fit for human consumption is best as it does not contain anti-biotics or hormones.
Variety of Pureed Veggies*
Regularly:, Green beans, Zucchini, Spinach, Celery, Parsley, Cucumbers, Greens, Chard, Kale, Squash, Asparagus, Pumpkin, Sweet potatoes/ Yams.
Sparingly: Cruciferous Family: Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Brussel sprouts.
Avoid: Nightshade family- Peppers, Tomatoes, Eggplant, Potatoes etc, mushrooms, corn. Avoid fruit. NEVER feed Avocado pits, Grapes/ raisins, or Onions- they are toxic.
Occasional Treats: Carrots.
*Pureeing veggies breaks down the cellular wall making the nutrients available. Dogs can't really break this down on their own. In the wild vegetable matter would mostly be found partially digested in the preys stomach. Organic vegetables are more nutritious and are free of toxic pesticides, and are not genetically modified aka "frankenfoods."
Supplements: Salmon Oil, Vitamin & Mineral Supplement, and Probiotics.
